Edmonton Oilers agree to 7-year deal with Zach Hyman, re-sign Tyson Barrie
The Edmonton Oilers were very busy at the beginning of their agency vacancy on Wednesday, signing Zach Hyman to a seven-year, $ 38.5 million contract.
Edmonton also announced defense attorney Tyson Barrie on a three-year contract extension for $ 13.5 million. It signed defense attorney Cody Ceci on a 4-year contract for $ 13 million. It also purchased the final two years of the contract from forward James Neal which raised a capitalization hit of $ 5.75 million.
The long-awaited move to sign Hyman comes after the Connor McDavidled Oilers lost a secondary score when they were swept by the Winnipeg Jets in the first round of the playoffs. Hyman has scored 20 goals in two of his six NHL seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs. He scored 15 goals and 33 points in 43 games last season.
The 29-year-old winger, who just closed a 4-year, $ 9 million deal, can play up and down the lineup, doesn’t take turns, can shoot penalties, and score a few goals. After a disappointing playoff performance last season, Toronto knew it had to get tougher, so losing a player like Hyman didn’t seem like a good idea. However, cap restrictions made the offseason more difficult.
Barrie returns for a second season at Edmonton after leading all NHL defenders with 48 points. He has been scoring eight goals and 40 assists last season. It was the fifth time in his 10-year career that he surpassed 40 points.
After a tough 201920 season in Toronto that saw production plummet and became the target of fan anxiety, Barrie, 29, was given a $ 5.5 million discount to get his game back on track with Edmonton to $ 3.75 million.
Barrie spent the first eight years of his career at Avalanche before being traded with Alexander Kerfoot to Toronto for Nazem Kadri and Calle Rosen in 2019.
In another move, Oilers defender Ethan Bear traded the Carolina Hurricanes for forward Warren Foegele. Fogle, a 25-year-old winger, scored 10 goals and 10 assists in 53 games for the Hurricanes last season. In 200 games in his NHL career, he scored 35 goals and 33 assists.
Bear, 24, brings a right-hand defender to the Hurricanes, who won the NL Central. It reached the Stanley Cup playoffs for the third year in a row. Bear had two goals and six assists in 43 games last year. It has played 132 NHL games in his career, all with the Oilers.
Carolina also reached deals with backup captain Jordan Martinook, defender Tony DeAngelo and forward Josh Leivo on Wednesday. The Associated Press contributed to this report.
