The Dallas Stars based in Dallas compete in the National Hockey League (NHL) Western Conference. The Dallas Stars has appeared in the Stanley Cup Finals five times (1981, 1991, 1999, 2000, and 2020). The Dallas Stars won the championship (1999) and Stanley Cup in 2020.

The team began competing in 1967 as the Minnesota North Stars. It was originally based in Bloomington, Minnesota, a suburb of Minneapolis. The North Stars’ inaugural campaign was a moderate success, with the team qualifying for a playoff spot and winning their first round. Despite ending the season on a losing streak.

The season marked by tragedy and center back Bill Masterton became the first NHL player to die from a match injury; he died after banging his head (without a helmet) on the ice during a competition in January 1968. Led by right-winger Bill Goldsworthy, the North Stars advanced to the knockout stages in 4 seasons (1969-1970 to 1972-1973). But in 1973 the team went on a six-season losing streak. In the late 1970s, the team fell into dire straits and sold to the owner of another struggling NHL franchise, the Cleveland Barons, in 1978. As part of the unique arrangement, the two teams merged and continued as the Northern Stars.
